Bankruptcy Search (QBS) · Bankruptcy search API & monitoring

Know about the filing before you act. With the court record on file.

QBS searches federal bankruptcy court records through PACER, one account at a time, in batches, or with bankruptcy monitoring across your portfolio, so collection, repossession, and foreclosure stop when the automatic stay says they must.

Straight from the court record

A scrub against someone else’s copy of the data can lag the court, or miss a debtor whose identifiers don’t line up. QBS searches PACER itself, returns an image of what it found, and can run alongside the scrub you already use.

Why QBS

Built for the people who answer for the stay.

01

Know before you act

Search federal bankruptcy court records at the moment a decision is made: before a collection call, a repossession, a foreclosure referral, or a suit. One person or company in real time, or a whole file at once.

  • Real-time search over a REST API
  • Search by full SSN, last four plus name, or company
  • Filter by filing, closed, dismissed, or discharged date
02

Evidence on file

Every search can return a PDF of the PACER screen it relied on, with the search criteria shown, whether a case was found or not. Name the files your way, group them by person or order, and mask SSNs before they reach your system.

  • PACER screen image for hits and no-hits
  • SSN redaction on certificates
  • Your reference number in every file name
03

Still true next month

A clean search today says nothing about tomorrow. Put accounts under monitoring and QBS reports new filings and docket activity, so a case filed after your last check still reaches the right person.

  • Monitoring lists, by account reference
  • New filings and docket changes reported
  • Add or remove accounts at any time

How you search

One account, a whole file, or the whole portfolio.

Real-time

The account is on screen, or the next step is about to run.

  • Single search over the API, with results in the response
  • Person or company, with SSN, last four, or EIN
  • Optional case summary, dockets, and documents

Batch

You have a placement file, a portfolio, or a loan tape.

  • Submit many people in one order
  • Results delivered to your endpoint, or picked up when ready
  • Thresholds cap follow-on searches on common names

Monitoring

Accounts need watching for as long as you hold them.

  • Separate monitoring lists for each portfolio or purpose
  • Add or remove accounts by your own reference
  • Feeds of new bankruptcies and docket changes

What comes back

As much of the case as the decision needs.

Start with the national search. Go to the bankruptcy court for the case summary and dockets only when it matters, for example only for open cases or only for the newest filing, so you don’t pay for PACER pages you won’t use.

Responses itemize the PACER charges each search incurred, and can include an image of the PACER screen, with the search criteria, whether a case was found or not.

National search

  • Case number and chapter
  • Court and state of filing
  • Filing date, closed date, and disposition
  • Name the case was filed under

Case summary

  • Discharged, dismissed, converted, and reopened dates
  • Confirmation hearing and plan confirmed dates
  • Closed reason
  • Debtor attorney and trustee contacts

Dockets & documents

  • Each docket entry with its date, sequence, and text
  • Links to the filed document
  • PDF retrieval of filed documents

Monitoring adds

  • 341 meeting date, time, and location
  • Proof of claim bar date
  • Discharge complaint bar date

Use cases

Wherever a filing stops the next step.

The automatic stay applies to every creditor, not just mortgage servicers. Here’s how teams in each industry use QBS.

Mortgage servicing

A filing changes what a servicer may do with a loan, often overnight.

Before referral or sale
Check for a filing before a foreclosure referral, a sale date, or an eviction step, and stop the file if a case is open.
Active case tracking
Watch open bankruptcies for dismissal, discharge, conversion, or a confirmed plan, as a backstop to outside counsel.
Proof of claim deadlines
Capture the bar date when a case is found, so the proof of claim is filed in time.

Banks & credit unions

Consumer and auto portfolios need a check before each collection step, and a watch in between.

Before collection activity
Search before calls, letters, or charge-off actions, so collection stops when a member or customer files.
Before repossession or suit
Confirm there is no open case before a vehicle is recovered or a suit is filed.
Portfolio monitoring
Keep delinquent and charged-off accounts under monitoring and act on new filings as they are reported.

Collections & recovery

Placement scrubs
Search a whole placement file before work begins, with the PACER image kept for each account.
Ongoing debtor monitoring
Monitor accounts while they are worked, and pull an account from activity when a filing is reported.
Company debtors
Search businesses by name and EIN, not just individuals.

Loan acquisitions

Due diligence on a loan tape
Search every borrower on a portfolio you are buying, and price open cases before you bid.
A second source
Run a direct PACER search alongside an existing bankruptcy scrub to catch what it missed.

From search result to workflow

A hit becomes a case, not an email.

On QBO, a bankruptcy is a case on the loan or account. It holds the chapter, court, case number, filing date, bar date, the trustee and debtor’s attorney, and ledgers for the proof of claim and pre- and post-petition amounts.

Proof of claim and motion for relief cases start their workflow from your template automatically, and route to the right team’s worklist with due dates. Bankruptcy counsel can work the file in QBO and see only the cases referred to them.

Workflow · before the action

  1. 1 Search bankruptcy filings
  2. 2 If/then: open case found?
  3. true → open bankruptcy case, hold the action
  4. → proof of claim, before the bar date
  5. → motion for relief, if approved
  6. false → proceed, PACER image on file
Illustrative. Which steps run, and in what order, is defined in your workflow template.

FAQ

Bankruptcy Search questions

Who can use Bankruptcy Search?

QBS is a business-to-business service for organizations with a permissible purpose, such as lenders, servicers, credit unions, collectors, law firms, and loan buyers. It is not available to consumers.

Where does the data come from?

From PACER, the federal judiciary’s Public Access to Court Electronic Records system. QBS searches the national case locator and, when you ask for it, the bankruptcy court’s own case summary, dockets, and filed documents. AI plays no part in finding or reporting a case.

What do I need to run a search?

A full SSN with the last name, the last four digits of the SSN with the party’s name, or a company name, optionally with an EIN. When no SSN is on file, QBS can look up candidate SSNs from a full name and address and search each one, within a threshold you set.

Whose PACER account is used?

Searches run under your organization’s PACER account, which you register with Quandis during setup. Each response itemizes the PACER charges the search incurred, so you can reconcile them.

How do you keep PACER costs under control?

You choose when to go beyond the national search: always, never, only for open cases, or only for the newest or oldest filing. Thresholds stop follow-on searches when a common name returns too many cases, and the response tells you when a threshold was reached.

Can you monitor accounts for new filings?

Yes. Add accounts to one or more monitoring lists, using your own account reference. QBS reports new bankruptcies and docket changes for those accounts, and you can remove an account when you no longer hold it.

How do I integrate?

Use the REST API with an API key in the X-ApiKey header, over HTTPS, with JSON responses. Batch results can be delivered to your endpoint or picked up when ready. If you run QBO, results land on the loan or account as a bankruptcy case.

Is my data secure?

Bankruptcy Search runs on the QBO platform. The QBO platform has a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation report from A-LIGN, and the information security management system that protects it is certified to ISO 27001:2022. API access requires a key, rate limits apply per key, and SSNs can be masked on PACER images. Security documentation is available in the Quandis Trust Center.

Need military status checks at the same steps? See Military Search for SCRA and MLA verification, and how both fit together in compliance and risk on QBO.
