Intelligent Document Splitting: An End to Manual Packet Prep
· Quandis · 2 min read
Still splitting documents by hand? There’s a better way.
Large, unstructured files are a fact of life in financial services. A scanned loan file, a claim packet, a due diligence package, or a batch of mailroom scans often arrives as one long PDF that holds many separate documents. Before anything useful can happen, someone has to work out where each document starts and ends, cut the file apart, and name the pieces.
The cost of manual splitting
Manual splitting is slow, repetitive work, and it sits at the very front of the process, so everything else waits for it. It means:
- Sorting through hundreds of pages to find document boundaries, one package at a time.
- Slowing down every downstream workflow, because classification, extraction, and review can’t start until the package is split.
- Risking human error, where a missed boundary merges two documents or a misplaced page ends up in the wrong one, and the mistake surfaces later as a misfiled document or a wrong value.
It’s also work that scales directly with volume. A busy month means more people splitting files, not more people doing the work that needs judgment.
How QDocs splits a package
QDocs Intelligent Document Splitting separates large, unstructured files into clean, usable documents automatically.
A multimodal model reads the package and identifies the boundaries between documents, using what’s on the pages rather than relying on fixed page counts or separator sheets. Each segment is saved as its own document, given its document type, and linked back to the original package, so the source file is never lost and every document can be traced to where it came from.
When a package already has reliable structure, you don’t need AI at all: QDocs can also split PDFs by bookmarks, explicit page ranges, or file size.
Splitting can run as soon as a document arrives, in real time, or across a backlog as a queued batch. And classification can run in the same pass, with each document’s fields extracted at once.
Clean documents, ready to move
The result is clean, organized documents that are ready for the rest of the process:
- Each document lands on the record it belongs to, under the right type.
- Extraction can start immediately, with a confidence for every value.
- Rules send only uncertain results to a person, so manual review is reserved for the documents that need it rather than every page of every package.
Splitting is the step most document tools treat as someone else’s problem. It’s also the step everything else depends on. For a closer look at why that’s true for bundled loan files in particular, see why splitting comes before everything in a loan file.
