Answers vs. Outcomes: Why Extraction Alone Isn't Automation

· Quandis · 2 min read

Most document processing tools give you an answer. QDocs gives you an outcome.

There’s a problem with traditional intelligent document processing that rarely gets discussed. It classifies. It extracts. It hands you a result. And then your team has to work out what to do with it.

The manual step that moved one place to the right

Consider what happens after a typical extraction tool finishes. Someone reads the output and decides what it means. They open the next system, key in the data, and manually trigger whatever comes next: a case, a task, a letter, a notification.

The reading is automated, but the decision and the hand-off aren’t. The manual work hasn’t gone away; it has moved one step to the right. And because that step sits between two systems, it’s often the least visible part of the process: harder to measure, harder to audit, and the first to fall behind when volume rises.

That isn’t orchestration. It’s document reading with extra steps.

What operations actually need

Financial services operations need a document processing solution where the extracted data triggers the next action automatically. In practice, that means three things.

Results land where the work lives. In QDocs, a workflow step calls the model, and the answer comes back as ordinary data on the record: the document’s type, its labels, and a score of typed values. There’s no export to load and no second system to update. Rules, workflows, worklists, and reports use the result like any other data.

Classification starts the right process. When a document is classified, the classification itself can drive what happens next. A bankruptcy filing, for example, can open the right workflow in your case management system without a person in the middle, so the work starts when the document arrives rather than when someone gets to it.

Confidence decides who looks. Every extracted value carries a confidence, and each document gets a weighted confidence across its fields. Rules route clean, confident results downstream and flag uncertain ones for review. People review exceptions, with the source document beside the value, instead of a queue of every document waiting for someone to process it.

Why the outcome matters more than the answer

An answer is a set of fields. An outcome is the loan updated, the case opened, the deadline set, or the exception in front of the right person. The difference matters most in regulated work, where the delay between knowing something and acting on it carries risk, and where every action has to be explainable later.

Because every QDocs stage runs inside the QBO Platform, the path from document to outcome stays in one audit trail: the document, the extracted values and their confidence, the rule that routed the result, and the person who reviewed it.

The difference

That is the difference between a document tool and QDocs. One tells you what a document says. The other makes sure something happens because of it.
